This course will prepare students for a successful career in Travel, Tourism & Hospitality management. Different teaching methods are used to provide opportunities for individuals to develop and enhance their business knowledge and competencies in the Travel, Tourism & Hospitality industry.

Minimum criteria for admission are as follows
EITHER
• Minimum age of 17 years PLUS
• English language: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 500 or an equivalent score in any other approved English language test.* PLUS
• GCE A-Levels with a minimum of 2 credits

• Shelton Certifi cate in Higher Education

• Successful completion of at least 12 years of formal education PLUS Shelton
Certifi cate in Advanced Study Skills

Aim
The main emphasis of the course is to give students the best possible preparation for a successful career in tourism and hospitality management. Lectures on international case studies, group discussions and activities used throughout the course provide opportunities for individuals to apply their learning, to develop and enhance their business knowledge and competencies in tourism and hospitality industry.
At the end of this program, students will be able to:

Module Synopsis:
Financial Accounting
This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical framework of accounting and the principles underlying accounting statements, preparation and presentation of financial statements for various forms of organizations and the ability to evaluate the performance and financial position of organizations from their financial statements.
Business Management
This module is designed to provide the students with an understanding of the functions of management, evolution of management theory, the organizational environment and the concepts of leadership and motivation.
Fundamentals of Marketing?
This module aims to investigate the principles that underpin the marketing process and how they apply in business. It is a broad-based unit providing a general overview of marketing for all students and a foundation for further study in the specialist area of marketing
Quantitative Techniques in Business
This module is designed to enable students to achieve an overall understanding of how and why statistics and mathematics are used in economic and business decision, and to demonstrate the ability to collect, present, analyze and interpret quantitative data using statistical techniques.
Human Resource Management
This module aims at providing an understanding of the human resource function of management through the consideration of systems and frameworks, which create and sustain the employment relationship within the organisation.
Fundamentals of Travel Tourism and Hospitality
This module is designed to enhance the knowledge and concepts acquired at the certificate stage. It will involve greater analysis and evaluation of principles and concepts resulting in a critical examination of the role of tourism within the global context.
Tourism Geography
This module is designed to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the basic component of geography in relations to tourism. The learning objectives of this module include imparting knowledge on the importance of understanding geography to tourism, the map and its components, features of Asian and world geography and the various tourist destinations all over the world.
Planning for Travel Tourism & Hospitality
The aim of this module is to increase student's awareness of the need to plan and manage tourism at all levels, within a national, regional and local framework. The intention is to show that with focused planning, the negative impacts of tourism can be kept to a minimum.
Assessments
The 8 modules are assessed by a written examination or written examination and Assignment. Examinations are held for 3 hours duration for a maximum score of 100%. The examinations are held at the end of each module and re-sit examinations are conducted after the assessment and award board meetings which are held 3 times each year.

The focus of the unit is not on information systems but on the processes. The unit develops the skills and techniques involved in managing information, and students will learn to manage information to inform decision-making.
Accounting for Management Decision Making
This module will enable the students to learn about managing finance within the business environment, management of working capital in the business, budgetary control and costing techniques, and apply some statistical techniques for the purpose of financial analysis.

Shelton Specialist Diploma in Tourism & Hospitality
The Shelton Specialist Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality is designed primarily for students who wish to pursue a career at an operational level, potentially leading to operational management level within the TH sector and in an English-speaking environment. The course provides a general introduction to the TH sector, a specific introduction to selected areas and an appreciation of some of the main business functions within the sector.
Admission Requirements
EITHER
- Min age of 18 years PLUS
- Shelton College Certificate in Advanced Study Skills
OR
- GCE ‘A’-Level passes in at least two subjects PLUS
- Minimum English language requirement of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent score in Shelton’s English Language Assessment Test or any other acceptable equivalent English Language test.
OR
- Exceptionally, any other qualifications subject to Shelton’s Academic Committee’s approval.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Appreciate the size, extent and diversity of the TH sector.
- Demonstrate an understanding of at least two of the business functions performed by companies within the sector.
- Evaluate the role and effectiveness of basic operational procedures within companies in the sector.
Course Duration
P9 months full time comprising 3-months in-college and 6 months in-company training

Mode of Delivery
There are 2 options for this course.
1. Without industrial attachment component
The total course duration is 4 months for full-time students comprising of 3 months of taught modules in college, and 1 month of independent project work.
The four months in college will involve 600 learning hours, comprising 140 hours of formal teaching and 460 hours of guided self-managed learning. Each of the four modules will last for four weeks. Applicable to the first three modules, each three weeks classes will be conducted for two ninety minute sessions per day, with students required to undertake directed self managed study for the remainder of the time. The fourth week will usually be devoted to assessment and assessment preparation. Applicable to the 4th module, the tutor will meet the student for a total of 5 hours for lectures and the 145 hours will be used for the project preparation.
2. With industrial attachment component
The total course duration is 9 months for full-time students, comprising 3 months of taught modules in college and 6 months of industrial training in company.
The three months in college will involve 450 learning hours, comprising 180 hours of formal teaching and 420 hours of guided self-managed learning. Each of the three modules will last for four weeks. For three weeks, classes will be conducted for two ninety minute sessions per day, with students required to undertake directed self managed study for the remainder of the time. The fourth week will usually be devoted to assessment and assessment preparation.
During the period of in-company training, employers will be required to ensure that students:
- Are given a structured itinerary which incorporates a range of activities including at least the following:
- Spend a minimum of one week each in at least two of the following departments / areas of operation:
- HR
- Sales / Marketing
- Customer Services / Customer Relations / Reception
- Accounting / Finance
- Be given a range of tasks and duties appropriate for a trainee position, avoiding an excessive amount of routine repetitive operations.
- Have a specified mentor who will oversee the student’s itinerary and progress, act as liaison with the College and be available to give in-house guidance and facilitation in relation to the student’s in-company project. The mentor should see the student for a minimum of twenty minutes, once per month on a one-to-one basis, to monitor progress, assist with facilitating access to material needed for the in-company project and offer practical guidance in relation both to work activities and to preparing and planning for the project.
- Be given appropriate additional training and induction in relation to all tasks performed within the company.
- Receive a work schedule that permits students to devote at least a minimum of 150 learning hours of quality time towards working on the project over the six months.

Financial Management
This module is designed to develop the student’s understanding of business finance/ financial management with emphasis on its integration with financial/ cost and management accounting. This module will introduce students to the area of company re-organizations and acquisitions
Financial Services
This module is designed to develop students' interest and appreciation of the Financial Services sector and the roles played by the organizations within it and to create an understanding of the issues, conflicts and problems which face organizations in the finance sector
Principles of Economics
This module is designed to provide an understanding of fundamental economic theories, concepts and policies, application of microeconomic principles and concepts to decision making in a business environment, the general macroeconomic environment and its effect upon business organizations and their markets and of international trade and the economic mechanisms employed to control and facilitate it
Corporate Law
This unit provides an introduction to basic principles of law relating to business. It will develops students’ knowledge of general principles of contract and criminal law, and more specific statutory provisions relating to consumer and employee protection. It also provides an introduction to business units, their information, management and dissolution. The student will be encouraged to analyse and evaluate legal provisions and to adopt a practical approach to problem solving.
Accounting in Business
In this module students will learn about managing finance within the business environment. They will learn about the management of working capital in the business, budgetary control and costing techniques. They will apply some statistical techniques for the purpose of financial analysis.
