ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE
Introduction:
Welcome to Shelton’s EGL program! We are delighted that you are
considering joining us. Here at Shelton we strongly believe in our
school’s motto: “No one gets left behind.” We strive to keep our
classes challenging, while remaining fun and interesting. Our teachers
will strive to go that extra mile in helping you achieve your goals.
At EGL we offer you variety. Not only in module content, but also in
learning styles. You would explore the four core ways of using English
through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Classrooms are
highly conducive, with experienced teachers inducing elements of fun
during lessons. Our teachers come from all around the globe and use
their expertise to train students to express in the language with
great enthusiasm.
Classrooms have modern built-in multimedia to boost the in-house
experience. Activities generate high participation from students and
prepare them gradually to the next level of course, right till its

There are three levels at EGL; Lower Intermediate, Upper Intermediate
and Advanced, each four months in length. Students are placed into the
level most appropriate for their English ability. Look out for
completing an English Language Assessment Test (ELAT) to determine
your appropriate placement. The entry points are as shown in the table
below:

After graduating each level you will have achieved a new level of
English mastery as measured by standardized IELTS testing.
Additionally, you will be taught skills that directly applicable to
the professional and academic world.
Lower Intermediate:
IELTS 3.0
Ability to give basic presentations in English and write
stories with prehensile structuring.
Intermediate:
IELTS 4.0
Ability to have free discussions on more advanced concepts
as well as a solid grounding in formal writing.
Advanced:
IELTS 5.0
Introduction to researching and delivering business
proposals with integrated multimedia support.
Additional Activities Outside the Classroom:
At Shelton we are dedicated to the belief that an engaged student is a
productive one. English is a living language and we are always looking
for new and exciting ways to teach it. Students are taken on weekly
trips to a wide variety of locations which not only provide concrete
groundings for target vocabulary, but also an exposure and enhanced
appreciation of different cultures and experiences. Students have been
taken to national and cultural landmarks like the Marina Bay, National
Public Library, Little India, Kampong Glam Museum, Arab Street, and
Sentosa. However, we have also been to locations like IKEA, Mind Café,
and to the cinema. We encourage our stu dents to see English as a
living language, one that not only opens new doors for their career,
but enriches their daily lives. We hope to see you soon in Singapore!
Your EGL Teachers:
Chris Ludwig (English Coordinator): I am American (born in Chicago) and I have four and a
half years of EGL training. In addition to Singapore, I have
experience teaching in China and Korea. I believe that English mastery
comes from both hard work and having fun.
Monica Vaswani: I have previously taught Speech and Drama in schools
in Singapore, before embarking my journey as a full-time EGL teacher at
Shelton. I am a Singaporean and enjoy teaching students from diversified
backgrounds. Fluency in English comes with practice, practice and practice;
not only inside, but outside the classroom to build familiarity and make learning
enjoyable.

Certificate for Higher Education
Duration
Full-Time:8 months
Part time: 16 months
The Certificate for Higher Education is a pre-degree or pre-diploma preparatory program designed primarily for students who wish to pursue higher education studies delivered in the English language. It is particularly appropriate for students who wish to study vocational subjects such as Business or Tourism.

Minimum criteria for admission are as follows
EITHER
• Minimum age of 16 years PLUS
• English language: IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 450 or 60% in SCI English Language Test or an equivalent score in any other approved English language test. PLUS
• Successful completion of at least 10 years of formal education PLUS
• A minimum of 3 credits for Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level or an equivalent qualifi from another country. (For other Asian countries we normally expect a good profi le on the student transcript and may further assess via interview or admissions test.)
OR
• Minimum age of 21 plus appropriate level of relevant work experience
OR
• Any other qualifi cation subject to Shelton’s Academic Board’s approval.
Modules
Effective Study Skills
The module aims to provide students with the fundamental learning skills necessary to derive maximum benefit from their Higher Education studies. As such, it will also increase the students’ independent learning abilities and good study habits. This module will help students to know and prepare for what to expect in Higher Education. It will include knowing oneself as learner, independent study, good study habits, study skills components and strategies, effective reading and learning approaches, motivational learning, time management, listening and note taking, computer skills, research and writing creative assignments, taking tests and examinations, questioning and cognitive procedures.
Advanced Academic English
This module provides students with the fundamental skills to use and understand appropriate grammar, punctuation and vocabulary at the Diploma level. The module will help students develop tools and strategies to improve their competency in written, spoken, aural and reading comprehension skills. Students will also gain insight into how to use dictionaries efficiently and effectively to increase their understanding and improve their own vocabulary and grammar usage. The course will allow students to apply an appropriate level of English in a variety of academic situations so they are prepared to do this at the next level of study.
Academic Writing Skills
This module provides students with the fundamental skills of writing for their academic work. It will help students to formulate their ideas and thoughts into writing. Students will develop the ability to write creatively, format their work for different platforms and learn how to plan and structure their writing. The course will help students to connect ideas with writing and increase students’ ability to perform independently.
Academic Research Skills
The module aims to provide students with the basic research skills needed for higher education study. These include how to find and select the most relevant information from source materials; understanding the concepts of qualitative and quantitative research; learning what plagiarism is and how to avoid it and learning how to do reference and use the Harvard referencing style.
It will also help students to use their own ideas and express opinions based on the knowledge obtained from research.
Communication Skills
This module aims to equip students with the communication skills necessary to gain maximum benefit from their higher education studies and to operate effectively as employees and managers in an organization.
Principles of Accounts
This module is designed to provide students with an introduction to accounting and in particular it aims to introduce the basic principles of financial accounting and their application, to acquire knowledge and techniques that will assist students in the performance of financial accountancy functions in industry and commerce and to enable students to interpret and report upon the information obtained from the use of Financial Statements.
Introduction To Travel Tourism & Hospitality
This module aims to introduce students to the basic principles and concepts of tourism as an academic discipline, to give students an appreciation of the history, dimensions, growth, impact and importance of tourism in the economic development of certain regions, to acquaint students with the various organisations and their role in developing and promoting tourism, to develop an understanding of the various components of international and domestic travel and to identify the current trends and issues related to tourism.
Quantitative Methods
This module aims to ensure that all students have sufficient basic numeracy skills to operate effectively in a higher education or typical working environment.
Business Studies
This module aims to introduce the nature and purpose of business and the various forms of business enterprise and trade activities and to introduce students to the main functional areas of business and to develop an awareness of what is involved in studying business at the higher education level.
Assessments
A variety of assessment methods is used, including examinations, assignments and presentations, This is to prepare students for the variety of assessments methods that they are likely to encounter in their further studies. Assessments are held at the end of each module and resit assessments are conducted after the assessment and award board meetings which are held three times each year.

Certificate in Advanced Study Skills
Duration
Full-Time:4 months
The CASS is a pre-degree or preparatory program designed primarily for students who have completed 12 years of full-time study and wish to pursue higher education studies delivered in the English language. It aims to provide students with the basic study and research skills
necessary to derive maximum benefit from higher education.
