HISTORY, MILESTONE & DEVELOPMENT

Shelton College International is a descendent of the noblest vision, to provide the gift of true education to mankind in all aspects of the word. We began in modest surroundings in 1993 and our mission is for Shelton College International to be the premier career development and education centre in Singapore and in the region.

At Shelton College International we provide high quality professional counselling and training services to meet the individual needs of our students in the most effective way. We believe that every student has the potential to develop into holistic individuals with a strong academic foundation. Our vision is to be an institution of excellence where staff and students model the values of continuous learning, teamwork and respect in a caring and challenging environment.

What began in 1993 in the humble premises of North Bridge Road Centre comprising two small office units of 1,500 sq ft and with just 60 students is now a completely different story altogether. When Ms Lesley Lim (Chief Operating Officer of Shelton) bought over the school, she began with no students. It was at this point when qualities such as integrity, trust, commitment and effective delivery were born of her vision for a thriving educational institution. It really was starting from scratch, but the drive for high achievement was backed by a well balanced board of directors comprising Mr. Patrick Hogan, Ms Lilian Lim and Mr. Gerard Loo. Within a month of the take over Ms Lesley Lim crossed international borders and recruited students for the Shelton bridging course with the first 25 students from Indonesia. The riots in Indonesia prompted the team to venture into China and today they are proud to have students from 22 Chinese provinces and throughout the region. The school began to invest in awareness programmes and soon there was a successful team focusing on English and O ' level programmes. Ms Lim was interested in students receiving their first internationally recognised certificate. So with the success in GCE ‘O’ levels, students could now enter junior colleges and polytechnics in Singapore, with a further opportunity to potentially enter National University of Singapore.

By the year 2003 Shelton College International was one of the first 20 pioneering private education organisation schools to receive the Singapore Quality Class Award. The school had begun to expand in size and grew in terms of courses offered leaving wider option for its students.

Shelton College International differentiated itself in their Mission Statement to be providers of quality education. This institution is not only a business, but an opportunity for growth in all aspects of development of the individual student. The school has a firm commitment to see that the holistic needs of students are met." We differentiate ourselves by focusing not on the number of students but on the quality of their education, how they will develop as human beings by instilling in them a sense of integrity and pride in them now and for the future." says Ms Lim.

At this point the Singapore Tourism Board was aggressively marketing Singapore to be a main hub and centre for education. Shelton school began its expansion policies and by 2003 it began to make its mark in Singapore as an outstanding institution and provider of the finest quality of education

Shelton is experiencing an influx of students from the countries in the region as follows: China, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The staffs contribute to the decisions made in the organisation and we maintain a great rapport between teachers and students and staff and management. All staff members have a sense of belonging and through weekly staff meetings and monthly reviews; Shelton becomes the voice of students and teachers alike to empower the different departments to set realistic targets and objectives. Shelton’s structure of communication encourages teachers to be warm and approachable, and to encourage students to communicate their problems, academic or otherwise.

Students may be in Singapore for the first time, and have many daunting challenges to face external to their academic requirements. Staff are encouraged to make their students feel at home and take up the challenges in their studies as well as problems they face on a daily basis. As a result of Shelton’s approach to studying in a foreign country, students are groomed towards character building, and success.

Shelton’s success is measured by Alumni Referrals which in the last year contributed to 30% growth year on year.
